Returning to school after the winter break can be quite stressful, given the abundance of tasks, limited sunlight, and students being away for weeks.
To transition back into teaching, I prefer starting with a few activities that assist students in regaining focus and preparing for the upcoming year. These French New Year's Resolutions for students offer a pleasant and laid-back approach to goal-setting, getting them ready to tackle their work with enthusiasm. Typically, I introduce this activity on the first day back before diving into our French winter vocabulary exercises.

I've incorporated these French New Year's resolutions writing activities into my curriculum for elementary and middle school students for several years. It's an enjoyable way to spend the first day back after a break. Typically, I integrate this activity with student self-evaluation conducted either before conferences or between semesters, providing a comprehensive approach to helping students concentrate on their academic objectives.

I have experience teaching both highly proficient French students and those who are just beginning their French journey. However, I prefer using a fully immersive French approach and offering necessary support to my beginners. This method proves to be an excellent way for them to acquire practical vocabulary not typically found in textbooks. For beginners, a simple list is enough, eliminating concerns about grammar, conjugation, or complexities.
Students thoroughly enjoy setting goals and reflecting on the past year. Occasionally, they grant permission for me to display their resolutions on the bulletin board, though I always seek their consent first. Typically, we store them in portfolios to maintain privacy, fostering a conducive environment for students to express themselves. When students remain in my classes for multiple years, it becomes a delightful experience for them to revisit these resolutions a year or more later.

The number of pages provides students with the flexibility to establish general resolutions or delve into more specific ones, and they thoroughly enjoy revisiting the previous year! Our most enjoyable moments come when we reflect on our favorite movies and songs. It's always amusing when students are surprised to discover that a song they think is quite old actually only debuted last February!
